Where It Lives (habitat)

Found in coastal heathlands, semi-arid scrubs and woodlands.

Like geckos and dragons, we could only find "group" names in traditional languages for the skinks. This one is in the Small Skinks Group.

Fat Skinks: Northern Bar-lipped Skink, Northern Mulch Skink, Bar-tailed Bar-lipped Skink, Bar-shouldered Ctenotus, Robust Ctenotus, Elegant Ctenotus, Port Essington Ctenotus, Leopard Ctenotus and the Northern Blue Tongued Lizard.

Small Skinks: Lined Fire-tail Skink, Storr's Snake-eyed Skink, Northern Dwarf Skink (Menetia maini and Menetia greyii), Ornate Soil-crevice Skink, Metallic Snake-eyed Skink, Northern Soil-crevice Skink and Spadling's Ctenotus.

Rainbow Skinks (Carlia) are another type of Small Skinks: Desert Rainbow Skink, Shaded-litter Rainbow Skink, Bauxite Rainbow Skink and Slender Rainbow Skink.

What It Looks Like

Snout-vent length: 35m

Black body with 2 pale stripes on either side of the body. Fire-red tail. Supra nasal scales distinct from nasals (see inset drawing).
